Black Tweed Scarf

100% Handmade in Ireland, guaranteed!

Nice and long, (72" L x 12" W) tweed wool scarf handloomed by Co. Donegal Master Weaver, Eddie Doherty.

The black tweed weave is a heavy-weight wool, warm and nubby but still flexible for wrapping and knotting. The color is not just black, but many earthy hues, with lots of colorful tweedy flecks woven into it.

*Coordinates with the black tweed caps.

Master Weaver Eddie Doherty hand weaves the wool on an antique loom in the small Atlantic seaside town of Ardara, County Donegal. Eddie is one of only a few traditional handweavers working in Donegal, the capital of Irish tweed.

If you've ever seen and felt Eddie's work, you instantly recognize the quality of his weaving. You really can see and feel the difference. It is incredibly beautiful and very soft. Rugged County Donegal is the capital of Irish tweed, and Eddie Doherty's work is legendary.

Don't settle for cheap imitations when you can get the real thing.

A recent article in Ireland's Telegraph Weekend concludes, "The truth is that there are only two commercial hand-weavers left in Ireland's tweed capital, and Eddie doherty is one, working from a tiny shop in Ardara. Inside are layer upon layer of blankets and throws in the wonderful, clean hues of the Irish countryside: earth and lichen; bracken and heather; stone and sky. Each piece is unique, created by instinct as Doherty pulls skeins of wool out of his storeroom.

Doherty started weaving in 1956, aged 16, "in those days it was either learn to weave or emigrate. Every second man in Ardara was a weaver." Now, the big producers use power looms. Doherty, 67, has eight children, but none seems inclined to follow their father. His pieces will soon become collector's items.
